Thursday, June 4: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Koln 75 (2025)”
Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Koln 75 (2025)”, a film by Ido Fluk. Suggested through our famous “suggest-a-film” feature at cinema-worcester.com.
Keith Jarrett’s legendary performance in January 1975 nearly didn’t happen.
Based on a true story, Köln 75 follows how the concert was conceived and orchestrated by the efforts of a teenage up and coming concert promoter, Vera Brandes, (played by German actress Mala Emde). Her enthusiasm set her to multitasking — from organizing the concert venue (the Cologne Opera House), promoting the event, and selling the tickets, to convincing Jarrett to perform when he almost dropped out when the Bösendorfer Imperial Grand piano he was promised was nowhere to be found.
John Magaro plays Jarrett with his own intensity, a sublime counterpoint to Mala Emde’s joyful portrayal of the enthusiastic and unstoppable Vera.
Köln 75 captures the compelling, entertaining and, until now, unknown back story about Jarrett’s one-hour, entirely improvised concert, which became the best-selling solo album in jazz history.
“A light and zippy music biopic explores the story behind one of the most famous concerts ever performed.” – IndieWire (UK)

Saturday, July 25: Kerri Powers at the Frontroom
It isn’t surprising that Kerri Powers landed the #1 spot on the Roots Music Report’s “Top 50 Folk Albums of 2014” with zero publicity. She has charted on the Folk Music Radio charts as well as the RMR charts.
Over the years Kerri has appeared at numerous prestigious venues and musical gatherings including The Boston Folk Festival, The Philadelphia Folk Festival, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, and Telluride Bluegrass Festival. She has toured throughout The United States as well as overseas. Her songs have been in movies and TV series
With ‘Love is Why,’ Powers’ latest self-penned full-length album, the New England-based artist explores the universal emotion of love and its huge influence on our decisions. In particular, she examines love in the context of holding on or letting go through human loss and grieving. The album’s original songs were written during the pandemic and after Powers lost her father, whom she calls “my best friend.”
The album, recorded at Dagotown Recorders in Boston, includes musical luminaries Bo Ramsey, Luther Dickinson, Kelvin Holly, Doug Lancio, John Putnam, Regina and Anne McCrary, Brother Paul Brown, Marty Ballou, Charles Giordano, and Asa Brosius. Singer-songwriter Paul Thorn on duet vocals sings a transcendent cover of Gregg Allman’s “Please Call Home.”
When you catch Kerri Powers on stage, you will immediately feel the realness and rawness of her artistry. She delivers art at its purest, a musical canvas painted with all the soulful colors and emotion that will pull you into her songs and message of love.
“I don’t know where this young lady came from but it’s got to be a secret place. This is not the kind of singing, writing, and performing that can be easily taught. It has to be in your spirit, in your blood and the fact that she is from the Northeast is going to confound the artists down South, in the Delta, in Memphis, Clarksdale, Austin, and Nashville.” – John Apice, No Depression
Showtime: Saturday, July 25, 7 pm. Doors open at 6:30. Advance tickets are now available at Eventbrite for $23.18 (includes $3.18 processing fee). Get them while they last! Light refreshments will be served.

From jump-swing to swamp boogie, country blues to funky New Orleans grooves, her deep husky vocals express an unmistakable joy.
Lisa Marie tells her audience that “joy and sorrow are two sides of the same coin.” This woman is a storyteller, with a gift that allows you to fall deeply in love with a song – sometimes one you may have heard before, but never have you heard it done quite like this… Innovative, creative vocal and musical arrangements that put a new twist on every story.

Saturday, August 8: “Who Wants To Know” at the Frontroom, with Rick Porter Opening
“Who Wants To Know” comes to the Frontroom for a special fundraiser to benefit WCUW. Opening for them is Ric Porter.
Who Wants to Know delivers a joyful mixed-up gumbo of R&B, Americana, Country, and Blues. The “who” in Who Wants to Know is Arny Spielberg (guitar/vocals), Bob Sarkala (guitar), Gerry Bellegarde (bass/vocals), and Doug MacLeod (drums).
This flexible confederation of old friends and talented musicians spans decades of the Massachusetts music scene, with memorable collaborations in every genre and type of venue—from the 70s punk clubs of Cambridge, to show bands, to award-winning blues ensembles, to singer-songwriter showcases. Some members have played together steadily for more than two decades; others lost touch, then happily reconnected through crazy turns of kismet.
The opening act will be Ric Porter. Ric has been a rock-steady presence in the Central Mass music scene for nearly 50 years. From The Preston-Porter Band, as a founding member of the legendary Zonkeraz, to Sons of the Soil, to The Ric Porter Band, Ric’s approach has remained the same: “Play the stuff you love.” He will open the night with his originals, possibly joined by Bob and Arny, and likely to have the band back him on some tunes.
We here at WCUW can’t thank Arny Spielberg enough for putting together this wonderful show, with such top notch musicians, as a benefit for community radio. A heartfelt thank you to each of them for donating their time and talents to make this night possible!
Showtime: Saturday, August 8, 7:00 pm. Doors open at 6:30. Suggested minimum donation $20 cash or Venmo. Light refreshments will be served.
The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.
Saturday, August 15: Troy Mercy at the Frontroom

Troy Mercy is an electrifying Blues power-duo with a Rock & Roll heart. He has toured as guitarist with The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Booker T. Jones.
Troy recently signed with Gitcha Records of Nashville. The first single will be released March 4, and the entire album, Let The Night Begin, will be out in May. “Expect songs you’ll be singing in your head later. This is raw and wild vintage-toned Rock & Roll that’s being created in the present.” (Gitcha Records)
Troy explains: “The power-duo format has brought me to life. I kinda need a lot to do musically or I just end up chewing on furniture, you know? Stripping things down to just voice, guitar, drums, gives me the most immediate emotional connection between my singing and guitar playing. There are no presets. I can steer the whole thing right off the edge of the world if I want to. Or play something pretty too.”
“This duo is like Lightnin’ Hopkins playing with The Small Faces while David Lynch films it.” -Alan Smithee

At 15, Williamson took part in regular weekly jam sessions at the Lincoln Neighborhood Center and hooked Pino up with a gig at Poli’s, which later became the Ale ‘n Bun. There Pino led a band that featured pianist David Maxwell and guitarist Bob Margolin.
Williamson counts his experience sitting in with saxophonist Howie Jefferson, drummer Reggie Walley and organist Al Arsenault at the Kitty Kat as a highlight of his early development.
